Australian Wicketkeeper And Captain Tim Penn Has Resigns For Sending Obscene Messages To Female Cricketer

Wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Penn has resigned as captain of the Australian team over a scandal involving sending obscene messages to a female cricketer.

According to the AP news agency, Tim Penn announced his resignation from the leadership after the investigation of Cricket Australia on the issue of nasty messages sent to the female cricketer four years ago.

In a press conference on Friday, Tim Penn announced that he was resigning from the leadership of the Test team, but that he would be available as a player for the Test team.

The former captain made the announcement at a time when the historic Ashes series against England on Australian soil is less than three weeks away and the first Test match is scheduled to start on December 8.

It may be recalled that after the hair tampering scandal that came to light in 2018, Steve Smith was removed from the leadership and Tim Penn was given the leadership of the team.

Announcing his resignation from the leadership, Tim Penn said: "It was very difficult to make this decision but it is right for me. Four years ago, I exchanged messages with my fellow cricketer and these messages are the reason for my resignation."

I fully support Cricket Australia in the investigation and I am very ashamed of this scandal," he said. It turns out that these messages of mine have somehow come to the notice of the people four years later, so my action is not of the standard that an Australian captain should be, and that is why I am stepping down.

He resigned and apologized to his family, teammates and management.

This is the best time for me to resign, to lead the Australian team is the greatest honor of my life and I am very sorry that my past attitude towards our team just before the Ashes has changed

Cricket Tasmania says the text messaging incident took place in November 2017, but found out about it in mid-2018, prompting an investigation.

Cricket Tasmania chairman Andrew Gagan said the exchange of text messages between the two adults was voluntary.

Cricket Australia has accepted Tim Penn's resignation from the leadership, with vice-captain Pat Cummins being considered the strongest candidate for the leadership post.

If Tim Penn, who underwent neck surgery in September, could be selected in the Australian squad for the Ashes series for any reason, including fitness issues, then Alex Carey will take his place as wicket-keeper.
