Squash World Cup: Malaysia Excludes Israel From The Tournament

Malaysia has refused to allow the Israeli team to take part in the World Squash Championship due to alleged security concerns. Israel speaks of political discrimination.

According to Israeli sources, Malaysia wants to prevent Israel's team from taking part in the men's squash world championship next month. "This is political discrimination," said Aviv Bushinsky, chairman of the Israeli squash federation. Israel and Malaysia do not have diplomatic relations.

Malaysia refuses to give the Israeli athletes entry permits. Bushinsky said that the pretext for this was "security concerns" with reference to Israel's conflict with the Palestinians.

The World Cup planned for December in Malaysia was originally supposed to take place in Australia. However, it was relocated due to the Corona crisis.

The World Squash Federation has not yet found a solution to the question, said Bushinsky. An arbitration process is currently ongoing. Should this not help, Israel will go to the International Sports Court Cas.

Israeli athletes have repeatedly struggled with discrimination in international sporting competitions. Arab and Iranian athletes often refuse to fight duels with Israelis for political reasons.

Malaysia had already refused to allow Israeli athletes to participate in the world championship in para-swimming in 2019. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) then withdrew Malaysia from hosting the competitions and moved them to London.
