Australian Open 2022: "Every Minute Is Precious": Djokovic's Next Appeal Against Visa Withdrawal

Novak Djokovic has had his visa revoked again. This was announced by Immigration Secretary Alex Hawke on Friday. Shortly thereafter, Djokovic's lawyers again announced an objection.

Hawke used his personal right and has again voided the visa for the unvaccinated Novak Djokovic. This was well justified and "in the public interest," said the minister on Friday.

It was initially unclear whether Djokovic would appeal against Friday's decision and possibly still be able to take part in the Australian Open.

Prime Minister Morrison expressly welcomes the decision

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has welcomed his Immigration Minister's decision. "This pandemic has been incredibly difficult for every Australian, but we have stuck together and saved lives and livelihoods.

Together we have achieved one of the lowest mortality rates, the strongest economy and the highest immunization rates in the world," Morrison said in a statement on Friday, emphasizing:

Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic and they have a right to expect the outcome of those sacrifices to be protected

After hearing: Djokovic's lawyers protest again

At a short-term court hearing on Friday, it came out that the Djokovic side would appeal again against the repeated cancellation. This was announced by his lawyer Nicholas Wood.

"I Don't Want To Be Here To Be In Sixth, Seventh Or Fifth Place"

Djokovic's lawyers want to submit the application later in the evening so as not to lose any time. "Every minute before the tournament starts on Monday is precious," Wood said at the hearing before Justice Anthony Kelly.

Djokovic has won the Australian Open nine times and is the defending champion. The tournament's record winner could also become the sole record holder with 21 Grand Slam titles with another triumph this year. According to the draw, he would face fellow countryman Miomir Kecmanovic in round one.
